Lunenburg Academy

National Historic Site Lunenburg Academy is a 120 year old Second Empire style former school building overlooking Lunenburg, NS. The building is now the only intact 19th century Academy building surviving in Nova Scotia and one of few remaining large scale wooden buildings from that era. In 2011 it ceased being a public school and now has a diverse range of tenants including an advanced music school, a sea school and the local library.

UPLAND were hired by the Town of Lunenburg to create a new site design sensitive to the property’s history but suitable for its new incarnation. The design features a new pedestrian plaza and welcome area, new outdoor library pocket park, native pollinator planting and raingardens, improved pedestrian access, new bus drop off area, new parking area with sustainable urban drainage, new natural play areas, new learning circle and improvements to the community garden, new wayfinding signage and interpretive signage for the site and town’s history.

Construction: 2020
