UPLAND are working with Breakhouse and GWL Realty Advisors to create a striking new $500,000 public landscape at Purdy’s Wharf on Halifax’s waterfront. A wharf style boardwalk park will extend the existing wharf across a new plaza between the office buildings and across a refreshed parkette all the way to Upper Water Street. The design features new contemporary looking public space with seating areas, Cor-Ten planters, concrete seating walls and chaise lounge seating. The existing trees in the parkette will be thinned out to create a more open, inviting and brightly lit space flanked by extensive planting beds with ‘waves’ of native perennials, grasses and shrubs. The boardwalk itself will simultaneously be a sustainable urban drainage feature as the base will be an infiltration bed allowing rain run off to percolate back into the ground. The wharf itself is to become a sloping lookout over the harbor with terraced seating to the side for people to sit and enjoy public performances.
